When is a Finishing Trowel Needed?

How to Use a Finishing Trowel

Your finishing trowel is instrumental to a perfect finish. Here’s how you can use your plastering tools to ensure your projects excel:

💡 Top Tip: To achieve a smooth finish, angle the trowel slightly and run it over the surface in the opposite direction of your initial strokes. This will help to remove any excess material and further smooth out the surface.

• Apply Your Material

  Using a plastering hawk or similar tool, scoop up a small amount of plaster or concrete mixture onto the trowel blade.

• Spread Your Material

  Hold the trowel at a slight angle and apply the material to your desired surface in a smooth, even motion. Work from one side to the other, ensuring an even spread.

• Smooth the Surface

  Once the material is spread out, use the flat edge of the trowel to smooth and level the surface. Apply gentle pressure and work in long, straight strokes*, overlapping slightly to ensure even coverage.

• Repeat as Needed

  Depending on the size of the surface you’re covering, you may need to apply multiple coats and repeat to achieve your desired finish.

• Clean Your Trowel

  Don’t forget to clean your trowel after each use. Use water and a stiff brush to remove any dried-on materials – this will help to prolong the life of your trowel and ensure flawless finishes.
